This Saturday, March 12 at the YMCA of Rapid City is the South Dakota State Bench Press & Powerlifting Championships . This is a USAPL sanction meet and should be a great opportunity to observe some of the states’s best lifters.
The Y is offering an Introduction to Kayaking class this winter and spring. It is a great class to learn some skills and find out whether kayaking is for you! Is this something that appeals to you? Let us know.
The Ron Bender Racquetball Tournament is next week. I remember Ron well. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Many times a week he would come into the YMCA and play racquetball – many times he played with our exec, Roger. So next week is a great time to remember an old friend.
When it’s this cold outside, it feels great to work out in a warm facility. You don’t have to worry about slipping on icy sidewalks or breathing in artic air. I like to get on an elliptical for a good cardio work out when it’s too cold be outside. What his your favorite winter workout?
How are your goals for the New Year coming along? Are you right on track or have you been chastising yourself for missing a workout? Remember, to give yourself credit for making a plan to become healthier and that change takes time. So take baby steps towards your goals and a New Year’s Resolutions. Does anyone have any other tips for working toward goals?
Happy New Year, Everyone! It’s that time of year when folks like to start the year out with New Year’s Resolutions or personal goals for the coming year. We see many of these folks at the YMCA. It’s an exciting time for Y staff as we help them our new members work towards their new goals. What resolutions or goals have you set for yourself this year?
It’s just a few days before Christmas – a special time for folks to get together in celebration. It’s also a great time of the year to do something special for someone else. Lately I’ve been a guest at an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge where there is an abundance of giving. Some of the giving I have witnessed has been cooking for others, a listening ear, a word of support, a ride to the store, or a local choir singing Christmas carols. Please share with us what you are doing in the form of giving for someone else.
As I heard a song from the Sound of Music during a recent concert by Dakota Choral Union, I couldn’t help but reflect on what are my favorite things. I was amazed to find myself thinking not of elaborate vacations or expensive toys, but ofsimple things in life. Then it occurred to me that simplicity was the point in this song. So here’s a sampling (in no particular order) of my favorite things
· The sound of children playing.
· My wife with her arm through mine as we’re singing in church.
· Playing just about any game or sport.
· Reading a book to a young child snuggled in my lap.
· My entire family seated around the dinner table.
· Watching a West River sunset.
